Project: Powering Health, Saving Lives ๐กโ๏ธ
The Energy-Health Nexus
In Myagdi's remote settlements, frequent power outages (or no grid access at all) compromise the ability of local health posts to provide essential services, especially vaccine storage and nighttime emergency care.
The Intervention: Off-Grid Solar
Youth Foundation Nepal installed a robust 2.5 kW stand-alone solar photovoltaic system at the Beni Community Health Post.
System Specifications
- Capacity: 2,500 Watts (peak).
- Storage: 8-hour battery backup for critical load.
- Critical Load: Vaccine refrigerators, birthing ward lighting, and essential medical equipment charging.
Impact on the Community
The solar system guarantees 24/7 power, eliminating the need for expensive and polluting diesel generators. The reliability of power has allowed the post to maintain the cold chain for vaccines, which serves a catchment area of over 7,000 residents.
Key Benefits (Unordered List)
- Improved Infant Mortality: Reliable power for nighttime deliveries.
- Reduced Operating Costs: Savings redirected to procuring essential medicines.
- Environmental Cleanliness: Reduction in carbon emissions from diesel usage.
Maintenance and Training
Two local technicians were trained in basic system monitoring and preventative maintenance to ensure the longevity of the installation. A comprehensive maintenance log is kept on-site.
